Post match report

F. Frățică

Our usual writer couldn’t make it this time – rumor has it he was busy dyeing his hair blonde, and he swears he’s not regretting the decision (we’re not entirely convinced).

After my debut as a starter on the pitch, it’s only fair I make my debut on arlechinii.ro as well. I’ll try to do this match some justice.

The weeks leading up to the game felt right. A few of the boys even showed up a day early to mark the pitch – perfectly fresh straight lines. Training sessions were sharp, energy was high, and everyone was itching to finally get the 2026 season going.

Then came match day and, as rugby reminds you every time, training and reality are not always on speaking terms. The final score doesn’t fully capture how the game unfolded, and there’s much more to the story that we’ll get into.

The first half was ours, at least everywhere except where it actually mattered: the try line. We spent most of the minutes attacking, phase after phase, knocking on the door but somehow never quite finding the key until the last play of the half. Our try-scoring machine spotted a gap that most of us didn’t even know existed, stepped around what felt like half the French team and grounded the ball. Deserved and slightly overdue.

Second half – a different story: the boys from Paris came back with a plan, and more importantly, with fresh legs and clear intent. We, on the other hand, started to feel the minutes from the first half. Small gaps began to appear in defense, and they didn’t need much invitation.

We kept pushing until the end. There were moments—a few late attacks, some hopeful phases—but we couldn’t quite break through their defense again. Credit where it’s due: they were a gritty, well-organized side that fought for everything.

This is rugby.

We gave everything we had, and as our captain said after the match, the attitude was there and that’s something we carry forward. Results will follow if we keep that.

The game also had the perfect setting, played just before the final round of the Six Nations. And the third half did not disappoint. We gathered to watch the matches together, erupting in cheers (or letting out deep sighs) as France sealed the title with a last minute penalty. The night delivered exactly what it always should: stories, beers, questionable singing and Louis Bielle-Biarrey tries on repeat. Turns out, Les Bleus also have a try-scoring machine.

In the end, we may have lost the match but we gained something better: memories, friendships and a great rugby day.
