We have completed the pilot edition of After Work Rugby Championship, the first National Amateur Rugby Championship the first national rugby championship for amateurs in Romania.
The format proposed was 10’s rugby, a format that is beneficial for both participating teams, allowing them to participate with a relatively small number of players, as well as spectators. Rugby 10’s is an extremely dynamic game, the phases are very fast and the essays are many and very spectacular.
At this first edition, 9 teams participated: Titanii, Carrefour Rugby, Dracula Old Boys, Arlechinii Bucharest, Morometii, Rechinii Constanța, Bucharest Barbarians, Samuraii and Gringos Transylvania, taking place over 5 stages: Bucharest-FRR, Turnu Măgurele, Băicoi, Constanța and Bucharest-Grivița.
A unique thing was the very wide age range of the participants, with players from 18 to 60 years old, all sharing the same passion. Congratulations to all participants, who have understood that you can experience strong sensations coming out of the comfort zone, entering on the pitch and playing rugby for pleasure, regardless of experience, age, height or weight. As long as there is respect for the opponent, anything is possible in a contact sport such as rugby.
We showed that such a competition can be organized in Romania, too, where this sport needs a great return to amateurism in order to be able to progress.
Special thanks to Gabriel Gosnea (Morometii), Dragos Olteanu (Rechinii Constanta), Lucian Mircescu (Aurora Baicoi), Serban Popescu (Barbarians), Adrian Dumitrescu (Dracula Old Boys), Florin Oprisor (Carrefour) and the Romanian Rugby Federation.
We also thank to the sponsors: Auto World, Serioux, Carrefour, The Mansion Advertising and Prokinesis.
